Influence of process parameters and head orientation on bead geometry for coaxial wire laser additive manufacturing

Abstract. Among Directed Energy Deposition (DED) processes for metallic materials, Wire Laser Additive Manufacturing (WLAM), distinguishes itself by the use of a laser beam to melt wire and produce beads. Successive depositions overlapping beads generate volumes obtain parts. Thus, controlling bead geometries is essential additive manufacturing process. Several research works have studied these influence main parameters on their dimensions, but few investigated effect feeding direction or angle. Moreover, all studies angle were carried out with lateral constant orientation. This paper focuses deposition head orientation coaxial feed 3 beams geometries. An experimental campaign conducted different orientations relatively horizontal substrate external profiles are measured using optical instruments in order extract average characteristic dimensions. Results indicate an rotation around its axis tilt height, width, asymmetry
